From <The Placeholder> to <Career Incubator>
미국판 <The Placeholder>부터 한국판 <커리어 인큐베이터>까지 2년 간의 여정
Around this time last year, my editors and I were busy getting The Placeholder ready to be published in the U.S. on May 30th 2025. I am very pleased to announce that almost exactly a year later, today May 14, 2026 (May 15 in Korea), the Korean version of The Placeholder is published, hitting the bookstores in Korea.
It has a new cover with a new title, <Career Incubator (커리어 인큐베이터)>, because there was no suitable Korean word to directly translate “placeholder”. There were many candidates for the new title, but my editor and I agreed on the Career Incubator, because incubation is what happens in The Placeholder. Incubate originates from Latin word, “incubare”, which used to mean “to sit on (eggs) to hatch them.” An incubator is where premature babies are taken care of in the NICU. Also, there are incubators for startups so that entrepreneurs could hatch new ideas into fully formed products and businesses. Like these examples, we need an incubator to create and shape up our work that’s uniquely meaningful to us; hence, a career incubator.
Stories Behind the Career Incubator
It was eight month of hard work, since I got the book deal in Korea with a renowned publisher, Sigongsa, last September. At first, I thought it would be much easier working on this Korean version. “How hard translation could be?” Korean is my native language, so I volunteered to do the job.
Well I was dead wrong. First, translation is no joke. No wonder why there is a graduate school dedicated for translation and interpretation. I learned the heard way that translation was a work of art in itself, because the different language requires a different way of thinking. Translating The Placeholder into Career Incubator, I went through the thinking process of The Placeholder again so I could find a perfect way to describe and express my thoughts for each sentence and chapter. This was also why I couldn’t really depend on any AI translation tools. It would spit out an okay-version of translation of each sentence or a paragraph, but it wasn’t good enough as it would miss the surrounding context of what I tried to mean. From this experience, I can say with 95% confidence level that we do still need human for translation, especially when it comes to books.
The other challenge was rewriting. I ended up rewriting 60% of the book to make the cases of real people I interviewed for The Placeholder experience more relatable for Korean audience, per publisher’s feedback. Recruiting and interviewing for six new Korean cases was basically like writing a new book. Plus, interweaving their stories into the original structure took much more time and effort than I expected. Yet I am so glad I did it—because the book feels more relevant thanks to the amazing six new stories of Placeholder experiences by Korean people. And I got to meet six amazing Korean people who were so open-minded and willing to experiment from the perspectives of an anthropologist, designer and mad scientist.
The Placeholder or Career Incubator: How to Navigate Time Liminal Space and Time
Looking at <The Placeholder> and <Career Incubator> side by side, they look more like siblings with a year apart rather than fraternal twins to me. Like the first borns are to their parents, everything about <The Placeholder> was first-time experience to me. I felt more nervous about my writing ability, the process and results of the book. Although both books are about the same topic and share the same content at least for 40%, I think my thoughts around the Placeholder experiences have further matured as I was working on <Career Incubator>.
Working on these two books back to back for the last two years, I became more convinced that this liminal space and time to carve out and shape up our own meaningful work really matters. Whether you call it The Placeholder or a Career Incubator, we need a way to create work uniquely meaningful to us. This not only matters to find our own footing in the age of AGI but also for self-actualization, the age-old human longing.

작년 이맘때, 저는 미국에서 편집자들과 출판사와 함께 2025년 5월 30일 The Placeholder의 출간 준비로 바쁜 나날을 보내고 있었습니다. 그로부터 거의 정확히 일 년 뒤인 오늘, 2026년 5월 14일(한국 시간 5월 15일), The Placeholder의 한국어판이 출간되어 한국 서점에 진열된다는 소식을 전하게 되어 정말 뜻깊게 생각합니다.
여러 방향으로 고심해 보았지만, “placeholder”를 직접 옮길 만한 마땅한 한국어 단어가 없었기에 한국어판은 새로운 표지와 새로운 제목인 <커리어 인큐베이터(Career Incubator)>로 출간됩니다. 새 제목 후보가 여럿 있었지만, 편집자와 저는 “커리어 인큐베이터”로 의견을 모았습니다. 인큐베이션(부화·배양)이야말로 The Placeholder에서 일어나는 현상이기 때문입니다. “Incubate(인큐베이트)”는 라틴어 “incubare”에서 유래했는데, 이 단어는 본래 “알을 품어 부화시키다”라는 뜻이었습니다. 인큐베이터는 신생아 중환자실(NICU)에서 미숙아를 돌보는 장치이기도 합니다. 또한 스타트업 인큐베이터는 창업가들이 새로운 아이디어를 온전한 제품과 사업으로 부화시킬 수 있도록 돕습니다. 이러한 예시들과 같이, 우리에게도 우리만의 고유하고 의미 있는 일을 만들어내고 다듬어 가기 위한 인큐베이터가 필요합니다. 그게 바로 커리어 인큐베이터입니다.
커리어 인큐베이터의 뒤에 숨은 이야기
지난 9월 한국의 유명 출판사인 시공사와 출간 계약을 맺은 이후, 여덟 달에 걸친 고된 작업을 시작했습니다. 처음에는 한국어판 작업이 훨씬 수월할 거라고 생각했습니다. “번역이 뭐 그리 어렵겠어?” 한국어는 제 모국어이니, 제가 직접 번역을 자청했지요.
그런데 정말 큰 오산이었습니다. 첫째, 번역은 결코 만만한 일이 아니었습니다. 통번역에만 전념하는 대학원이 따로 있는 데에는 다 그만한 이유가 있다는 걸 뼈저리게 깨닫게 되었고, 번역은 그 자체로 하나의 예술 작업이라는 걸 호되게 배웠습니다. 언어가 다르면 사고방식 자체가 달라지기 때문입니다. The Placeholder를 커리어 인큐베이터로 옮기면서, 저는 The Placeholder를 쓸 때의 사고 과정을 다시 한번 되짚어야 했습니다. 그래야 문장 하나, 챕터 하나마다 제 생각을 한국어로 가장 잘 담아낼 표현 방식을 찾을 수 있었기 때문입니다. 이것이 바로 AI 번역 도구에 온전히 의존할 수 없었던 이유이기도 합니다. AI는 문장이나 단락 단위로 그런대로 괜찮은 번역을 내놓긴 했지만, 제가 전달하려는 의미의 앞뒤 맥락을 놓치는 경우가 많아서 그 정도로는 충분하지 않았습니다. 이 경험을 통해, 적어도 책 번역에 있어서만큼은 여전히 사람의 손길이 필요하다고 95% 확신을 가지고 말할 수 있습니다.
또 다른 난관은 새로 쓰게 된 파트였습니다. 출판사의 피드백에 따라, The Placeholder에서 인터뷰한 실제 인물들의 사례가 한국 독자들에게 더 와닿도록 책의 60%를 새로 썼습니다. 한국인 사례로 여섯 분을 새로 섭외하고 인터뷰하는 작업은 사실상 새 책을 쓰는 것과 다름없었습니다. 게다가 이들의 이야기를 기존 구성에 자연스럽게 엮어 넣는 일은 예상보다 훨씬 더 많은 시간과 공이 들었습니다. 그럼에도 정말 잘했다는 생각이 듭니다. 한국인들의 관점에서 그들이 겪은 플레이스홀더 경험을 담은 멋진 새 이야기 여섯 편 덕분에 책이 한층 더 와닿게 느껴지게 되었기 때문입니다. 더불어 인류학자, 디자이너, 그리고 무모한 과학자의 관점에서 열린 마음으로 기꺼이 실험을 감행한 멋진 한국인 여섯 분을 만나게 된 것도 큰 수확이었습니다.
The Placeholder 혹은 커리어 인큐베이터: 전이적 공간과 시간을 항해하는 법
<The Placeholder>와 <커리어 인큐베이터>를 나란히 놓고 보면, 이란성 쌍둥이라기보다는 한 살 터울의 형제자매처럼 느껴집니다. 부모에게 첫째 아이가 그렇듯, 제게는 <The Placeholder>의 모든 것이 처음이었습니다. 제 글솜씨에 대해서도, 책을 만드는 과정과 결과에 대해서도 훨씬 더 긴장했지요. 두 책이 같은 주제를 다루고 적어도 40%는 내용을 공유하고 있긴 하지만, <커리어 인큐베이터>를 작업하면서 플레이스홀더 경험에 대한 제 생각이 한층 더 무르익었다는 느낌이 듭니다.
지난 2년 동안 이 두 권의 책을 연달아 작업하면서, 우리만의 의미 있는 일을 깎고 다듬어 갈 수 있는 이 전이적 공간(liminal space)과 시간이 정말 중요하다는 확신만큼은 더욱 깊어졌습니다. 그것을 플레이스홀더라 부르든 커리어 인큐베이터라 부르든, 우리에게는 우리 자신에게 고유하게 의미 있는 일을 만들어 갈 방법이 필요합니다. AGI 시대에 우리만이 설 수 있는 유일한 공간을 만들어 내고 차지할 수 있기 위해서뿐만 아니라, 인류의 오랜 갈망인 자아실현을 위해서도 이는 중요한 일입니다.
